The 2021 ARIA Award nominations have just landed, with Genesis Owusu and Masked Wolf receiving six and five nominations respectively. It's been a great year for hip-hop in Australia, and the nominations reflect the strength of the releases.
Genesis Owusu and Masked Wolf are both up for Best Artist and Best Hip Hop Release, with Genesis Owusu also nominated for Album Of The Year, Best Independent Release and Best Australian Live Act. The nominations are for his debut album Smiling With No Teeth, which is sure to feature in the best-of lists at the end of the year.
Following the global success of Astronaut In The Ocean, Masked Wolf's been nominated for the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist, Best Video and Song Of The Year, as well as the two aforementioned awards.
While The Kid LAROI might be based overseas, he's still always showing love to Australia, and he's received four ARIA Award nominations after a record-breaking 2021. He's nominated for Best Artist, Best Pop Release, Best Hip Hop Release and Song of the Year, proof of the versatility of his sound.
Other acts that have had a big year include Ball Park Music, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Tkay Maidza and Budjerah, all receiving multiple nominations. While it's been a tough year for Australian music, it's in a great spot to emerge better than ever in 2022.
