Olivia Rodrigo's kicked off her world tour for her hugely-successful debut album, SOUR, and she's marked the occasion with a cover of an Avril Lavigne classic (complete with a climb onto a grand piano).
Playing her first show of the tour in Portland, Oregon, Olivia introduced a cover of Avril's 2002 hit Complicated by saying, “This next song is a song I really love by the pop-punk princess herself," before launching into an energetic performance of the track.
Olivia's spoken about her love for Avril before, with the pair meeting at the Variety Hitmakers Brunch. Olivia received an award from Avril, and told her, I am such a massive fan of you. I look up to you so much. So, this is so surreal for me." Listening to SOUR (especially tracks like good 4 u and brutal), it's pretty obvious that Olivia's a pop-punk kid at heart.
Her cover of Complicated is especially timely given Avril Lavigne's just released her new album, LUV SUX. Teaming up with Travis Barker, it's a reminder of why she's held in such high esteem amongst pop-punk fans, and her influence on the music of today has never been stronger.
